Since you came across this post, I’m guessing you already know how harmful the average candle can be for your health. Just in case anyone is out of the loop, let me fill you in real quick.
This post is all about non toxic candles.
Toxic Candle Ingredients to Avoid
Most candles contain the following toxic ingredients that are released into the air we breathe when lit:
- Paraffin: a petroleum-based product that can emit harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These VOCs may interfere with hormones and include substances that are carcinogenic and neurotoxic. When inhaled, these chemicals can lead to respiratory issues like allergies, asthma, and bronchitis.
- Fragrance/parfum/perfume/aroma/flavor: fragrance can be labeled as any of those words, and that one word can actually represent up to 4000 different chemicals used to create a signature scent. There are hardly any regulations when it comes to disclosing ingredients for fragrance, and many synthetic fragrances have been linked to a number of health concerns like hormone disruption, migraine headaches, asthma attacks, rashes, and more.
- Lead containing wicks: most candles contain lead in the wicks or use core wicks made of zinc and tin, which can release trace amounts of heavy metals into the air. Opting for candles with cotton, hemp, or wooden wicks can help avoid these risks.
Look out for companies that use words like “natural” or “clean” to market their product. Those words aren’t regulated and are used quite frequently, even when a product actually contains toxic ingredients. Check the ingredient list and if it contains paraffin-based wax, fragrance, and has no information about the wick, it’s a no-go for me.
Tips for Finding the Cleanest, Non Toxic Candles
The following wax bases are a safe choice for clean-burning candles:
- Beeswax: Considered the cleanest base for candles. Many claim it can actually be a natural air purifier for your home.
- Coconut wax: Also considered to be one of the cleanest bases for candles. A big perk is that It has a low melting point, which helps the candle last longer. One reason you may want to choose coconut wax over other bases is that it has a stronger scent throw too.
But what about soy wax?
You will see soy wax commonly used amongst “non toxic” brands because it is the most economical base. However, the controversy with soy is that 98% of soy crops in America are sprayed with pesticides. Additionally, 94% of crops are genetically modified. Soy candles are very likely releasing toxic chemicals into the air because of the way they are grown.
Again, there are hardly any regulations with what companies put on their labels, so even a soy candle labeled “all-natural” or “organic” may not be true considering the stats. Unless you can be sure a soy candle is truly organic, paraffin-free, and fragrance-free, I would avoid it.
100% natural essential oils vs fragrance oils:
- Essential oils: Essential oils are highly concentrated liquid plant extracts that are converted into oils through steam distillation or solvent extraction. They have aromatherapy properties and other therapeutic healing properties. They bring the scent without the negative side effects of synthetic fragrances.
- Fragrance oils: Fragrance oils are a mix of man-made synthetic compounds and natural aromas, made to mimic a naturally occurring scent. These scents are more potent than essential oils and have a stronger scent throw. I’ve noticed many naturally-minded brands opt for fragrance oils, and they always say their fragrances are tested to be free of parabens, phthalates, and sulfates. This may be true, but I’m not sure there is such a thing as a completely toxin-free fragrance oil. This is another controversial topic, so I would do more research to see if fragrance oils are something you’re comfortable using.
I like being on the safe side by choosing 100% essential oils as natural fragrance for my products. So get ready for my top 7 non toxic candle recommendations!

They seem to get high praise from their customers that their products actually work, which is not an easy feat with natural ingredients.
Their non toxic candles are only made with beeswax, coconut oil, and essential oils, and they have a variety of scents from earthy, to sweet, to citrus.
